Sunbury - Charles Edward Schlegel, Jr., 86, of Sunbury, entered into Eternal Life Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in his home surrounded by his loving family, priest and church choir, while they sang one of his favorite hymns.
Born in Shamokin on June 20, 1938, to the late Charles Edward and Mary Ann (Heitzman) Schlegel, Charles was a 1956 graduate of Shamokin Area High School. He graduated from Bloomsburg State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
On April 4, 1959, he married the love of his life, Elaine Burrows, who survives.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Charles is survived by a son, Charles E. Schlegel III, and his wife, Tina; two daughters, Pamela Schlegel; and Lynda Schlegel Culver and her husband, Thomas; four grandsons, Charles E. Schlegel IV, and his wife, Nicole; Brian Lenig and his wife, Michi; Christian Schlegel; and Joshua Culver; three granddaughters, Amanda Riedinger and her husband, Kyle; Kristen Lenig; Jocelyn Schlegel Deivert and her husband, Dylan; four great grandsons, Brandon Riedinger, Charles Schlegel V, Henry Schlegel, and Chase Lenig; three great granddaughters, Belle Deivert, Laina Riedinger, and Mori Lenig; one great grandchild arriving this summer; a brother-in-law, Ronald Burrows and his wife, Ruth; and
two sisters-in-law, Marylou Long and Joyce Burrows.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by a brother, Paul Robert Schlegel; and two brothers-in-law, Al Long and Marlin Burrows.
Charles led by example and his unwavering dedication to the things and people he loved most - his family, his church, his students and community - was evident in every interaction, phone call, lesson, and advice session.
He was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Sunbury. Over the years, he served on Vestry, Altar Guild, as Senior Warden, Usher, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, and Sunday School teacher.
Charles taught social studies at Shikellamy High School for 37 years, focusing on history and government. He served as the Athletic Director, and coached football and basketball.
He served on Sunbury City Council for 8 years, Sunbury Municipal Authority for 33 years, and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Board of Trustees for 7 years.
His kindness, humor, thunderous voice, smile and his ministry for everyone he encountered will be missed by many.
His grandchildren will feel his absence in the early morning hours when he was always available for a call, and he was at his liveliest.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:45 pm, Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Sunbury. A musical prelude will begin at 2:45pm, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00pm with the Reverend Dina Carter Ishler, officiating.
